Who Are We and What Are We Trying to Accomplish?

Are you someone who thinks there are many ‘right’ ways of doing, thinking, and being?

Do you believe people of every culture have value?

Well, we feel the same way!

That’s what drives the design for Families of the World, our documentary series for children. We try to let viewers make their own judgments, to show what people in other countries have, not what we might think they lack, and to avoid attributing feelings and motivations unless revealed to us by our subjects. We don’t make comparisons to the USA, and in fact, other than in ‘Families of the USA’, we never mention the US at all.

My husband, Mark and I have produced this series for more than 20 years, and now we’re adding new programs. They still follow two families in each country through a typical day, but the subject families are involved in successfully overcoming the effects of climate change, environmental degradation or economic upheaval.

If you believe it’s important that young people not only learn about these problems, but also know that people are working to solve them, join us to ensure that new Families of the World programs reach as many libraries, families and classrooms as possible.

About Families of the World

I’m president of Arden Media, the award-winning company that produces the series. I’ve produced programs for a wide variety of clients such as Sesame Street, the EPA and the Cancer Society, and I supervise production of new Families of the World shows, working with talented writers, cinematographers and editors. Please find our bios and lists of clients and awards below.

Families of the World offers a documentary-style “day in the life” glimpse from a child’s point of view into how people in different countries live. Focusing on two families, one urban and one rural, the thirty-minute programs invite viewers along through parents’ and kids’ daily routines, introducing both similarities and differences from our own.

The series and accompanying free online teachers guides are used in classrooms around the country as valuable tools for multicultural education and language learning and are found in most public libraries. Families of the United States was selected by the State Department to represent life in the USA in 200 US embassies.

The 100+ awards and endorsements the series has garnered attest to Families of the World quality. These include the Oppenheim Gold Award, Parents’ Choice Group Award, and NAPPA (National Parenting Publications of America) Gold Award, as well as endorsements from KIDS FIRST!, Booklist, Dr. Toy’s Top Ten Most Responsible Products, and Dove Foundation.

School Library Journal applauds the Families of the World series as “excellent,” providing “an intriguing taste of another culture,” while M. Downs of Whitefish Bay School district says, “I think that your series is the best I have ever seen from a child’s point of view”.

Why Are We Asking For Your Support?

Mark and I did most of the production work on the series…. researching, writing, shooting, and editing the shows and teachers guides ourselves. But we’re getting older, and now we have to hire others to do this work. That’s why we’re asking you to help ensure that we can produce new shows and put the series in a position to continue into the future.

If you have suggestions for possible corporate sponsors or for families to profile, we’d like to hear them. And please share our project with your friends and colleagues.

Eleanor “Georgi” Marquisee

As a child, Georgi imagined herself in the far-off places she read about in her neighbor’s National Geographic magazines. Throughout her life this fascination has drawn her and husband/partner, Mark, along a path of involvement with other cultures. Georgi served on the boards of Delaware Council for International Visitors and People to People, Delaware, also acting as co-president, and participated in the International Council of Delaware.  She and Mark have hosted dozens of international visitors and students.

For more than 30 years Georgi has served as President of Arden Media Resources, a full-service video production company with clients ranging from Sesame Street and Montessori Society, to the EPA, Mitsubishi and the DuPont Company.

In the 1990’s, combining their interest in education and culture, Georgi and Mark began to develop “Families of the World,” their series for children, which documents family life around the globe.  The programs have garnered more than a hundred awards and endorsements from educational and parental organizations.

Before joining Arden, Georgi taught art in a public school near the Canadian border, did art therapy at a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed children and worked as a Justice of the Peace/Magistrate for the State of Delaware.

Georgi earned her BA in art from College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, serving as Class President in her freshman and junior years. She earned an MS in psychiatric art therapy from Hahnemann Medical College (now Drexel University) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has been a featured alumnus of both schools, and several of her paintings are in the permanent collection of College of St. Benedict.

Georgi received the ‘Strong, Smart, Bold’ award (formerly ‘She Knows Where She’s Going’) from Girls Inc. of Delaware and the Women of Distinction award from Chesapeake Bay Girl Scout Council  and was recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus by the College of St. Benedict.

A founding member of Wilmington Women in Business, Georgi served on the Federal Reserve Bank’s Small Business and Agricultural Advisory Board and is on the board of Wilmington’s Urban Environmental Center.

Mark J. Marquisee

Mark and former partner Jerry Millstein started Arden Films, Inc. more than 40 years ago. Mark’s contribution was a 16 mm film camera, purchased with a portion of an award presented to his doctoral advisor, Dr. Robert Holly, who received the 1968 Nobel Prize for decoding the structure of the alanine transfer RNA.

Jerry, a musician as well as a physicist, bought a professional audio recorder and the two began to make films when they weren’t working at the DuPont Company. Eventually, they left DuPont, and for a time, both worked at Arden Films.  In 1976 Jerry left to pursue other interests (music, computer programming) and Mark’s wife, Georgi, joined the company.

Over the years, with Mark as principal camera operator, Arden Films (now trading as Arden Media Resources) has served a wide variety of corporate and non-profit clients, garnering dozens of national and international awards.

Mark shot and produced numerous globally-themed segments for Sesame Street, one of the world’s best-known and loved children’s programs.  He produced a series of shorts featuring artists and their work, and he is videographer and co-producer of “Families of the World,” a widely acclaimed educational documentary series for children, as seen on PBS and distributed to schools and libraries in the US and abroad.

During his 11 years in the Central Research Department of DuPont, Mark worked on a cancer therapy approach he conceived, which uses a ‘silver bullet’ to deliver a masked toxin to tumor sites, where the toxin is then released to kill the tumor.

Mark obtained his BF degree at New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse and his BS in biochemistry from Syracuse University. He earned his PhD from Cornell University.
